Buncombe County Public Health leadership discusses recommendations regarding vaccine-preventable diseases.
As of Jan. 13, 2026, Buncombe County Public Health has recently confirmed cases of measles, a highly contagious disease, in the County. We have not seen this disease locally in decades. Additionally, varicella (chickenpox) is circulating widely in local communities, and pertussis (whooping cough) continues to rise, with reported cases in 2025 surpassing those in 2024. This is all happening while respiratory illnesses such as the flu, RSV, and COVID are also increasing.
This town hall includes:
· Updates on the status of the spread of infectious diseases
· What the County is doing in response
· How these developments may impact local businesses
· Guidelines for prevention and preparedness as well as response
