Honestly there is a decent sized spot in their little band and the performers at some point play accompaniment. I assume they used to be a quartet and maybe a character that was once apart of their band can no longer play due to the sickness most of the city people are undergoing.
I'm not going to spoil The Two Embers :) but I will say the composer of that animation project, Kevin Penkin, primarily makes anime music.
