Illimani, the second-tallest mountain in Bolivia, towers over La Paz skyline, the largest city in the South American country. Illimani stands at 6,438 meters (21,122 feet) above sea level.
The altitude presents its own challenges, as does the mountain itself. After reaching high camp at Nido de Cóndores (a hair under 18,000 feet), the climb begins with a short class 3 section on rock before reaching the glacier. The glacier itself is mostly a steep climb, at times exceeding 50 degrees near the summit. The path up to the summit also follows and crosses several dramatic crevasses.
Overall, this was another of several beautiful Bolivian mountains we climbed in early July 2024.
