"skycatcher" is a piece influenced by my trip to Japan in 2025, specifically in the numerous temples and natural spaces around Kyoto. The furin, a Japanese wind chime, can often be heard in these environments during the summer, providing the serene atmosphere with a beautiful mirage of color. The furin consists of three components: (1) gaiken: the bowl or bell-shaped exterior; (2) zetsu: the bell-clapper; and (3) tanzaku: strips of colorful paper that flutter in the breeze. When the wind catches the tanzaku, it claps with the zetsu against the gaiken, resulting in a chime. skycatcher is ternary form, representing the three major parts of the furin and how it was interpreted during my travels.
