Now moving onto building a bass boat…one of the more interesting things that I didn't realize about this process..is boats are built in reverse..

When you think about a way a car is made…each part is fabricated and then each part is painted. However in the bass boat world..you start with the paint…or in this case…you start with the gelcoat and then you build the boat behind it. So in order to explain that a little further let's talk about part 2 to building a bass boat which is LAMINATION.

Now Lamination can be separated in 7 steps.

Step 1 is all about Prepping and Taping Molds. When a bass boat is ordered, each mold is thoroughly inspected because a boat will only ever be as good as the mold. Once the mold is inspected they will begin the taping process. This is exactly like taping your house when you want to paint the walls…but in this case you are taping the mold and separating certain places on the mold that will receive different colored gelcoat.

Step 2 is Gelcoat. Each fiberglass part of the boat will get gelcoated in a large spray booth. This includes the boats haul, the boats deck, different parts like the Livewell, and in IKONS case..the liner. After the gelcoat is sprayed…

Step 3 is Fiberglass. Most boat owners know that their boats are made out of fiberglass but they don't know that this is done through a process called lamination. Now there are 3 different methods of lamination the IKON boats use. Method 1, which is used for the boats deck and liner, is the “by hand” method. Skilled laborers use small rollers to roll resin into these fiber sheets. This was a really cool process to witness and although it may look fairly easy…this is a skill that can take a long time to develop. Method 2 of lamination is called INFUSION.. which is done IKONs boat Haul and Seats. Now an infused haul is not common in the bass boat world and it is truly one of the biggest things that separates IKON from other boats. LONG Story short…Infused hauls allow you to maximize the physical properties of the laminate by getting a very near perfect resin/fiber ratio. This can give you a stronger but lighter haul leading to optimum performance out on the water. Method 3 is called Light RTM…this is basically infusion of a 2 piece mold so you have finished surfaces on both sides. This is done to IKONs Livewell, cooler and glovebox lids. Now after all molds have been gone through their different lamination processes…it's really time to start making the boat look like a boat.
