Old phalaenopsis orchids will develop a very long stem. This is a good thing, because a long stem means that the phalaenopsis is a very mature orchid. But, in certain climates and conditions, it is not feasible to keep that stem so long, because all new roots will grow at the base of the upper part of the phalaenopsis stem, and could grow aerial, or stop growing before they reach the media. So, apart from making the orchid look nice when potted up again, cutting a stem of an old phalaenopsis is the way to go.
