Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (1621–1675) was the ninth Guru of Sikhism and a significant figure in Sikh history. His life and martyrdom played a crucial role in shaping the faith and its principles. Here’s a brief overview of his contributions and legacy:
Early Life
Born on April 1, 1621, in Amritsar, he was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (the sixth Sikh Guru).
Originally named Tyag Mal, he earned the title "Tegh Bahadur" (meaning "Brave of the Sword") for his valor in battles alongside his father.
He spent many years in meditation and spiritual practice, emphasizing humility and devotion.
Becoming the Ninth Guru
In 1664, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was appointed as the ninth Guru by Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji before his passing.
He traveled extensively across India to spread Sikh teachings and uplift the oppressed.
He founded the city of Anandpur Sahib, which later became a key center for Sikhism.
Defender of Religious Freedom
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, there was a forced conversion campaign against Hindus and non-Muslims.
Kashmiri Pandits sought Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s help when they were being forcibly converted to Islam.
Guru Ji courageously opposed these injustices and offered his life in defense of religious freedom.
Martyrdom
In 1675, he was arrested by Aurangzeb and taken to Delhi, where he was given the choice to convert or face execution.
Guru Ji refused to abandon his faith and was publicly beheaded in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.
His martyrdom reinforced Sikhism’s commitment to justice and standing against oppression.
Legacy
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s sacrifice is remembered as a defining moment in Sikh history.
His son, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, later founded the Khalsa and carried forward his father's mission.
The Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi marks the site of his martyrdom.
His teachings are recorded in the Guru Granth Sahib, emphasizing fearlessness, righteousness, and devotion to God.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is often called "Hind di Chadar" (Protector of Hindustan) for his stand against religious persecution. His sacrifice remains an inspiration for Sikhs and others around the world.
