How to properly mix PermaColor Select grout with built in sealer and stain protection
Properly mixing PermaColor Select grout is, in my opinion, a very easy task. We have found a couple workarounds that make a pretty big difference when it comes to ease of use. Read on to see how we mix every batch of PermaColor Select.
The first and most important step is to measure the water. The water content is what determines the final color. The color packet is dissolved in water and if the color is more saturated or concentrated it can show up. The best advice I can give is to use the same amount of water every time.
While I’ve heard that Laticrete is going to keep the shaker bottles permanently, I still have concerns about them staying around. Keeping the shaker bottle clean means we only use it to measure water. We don’t put the color packet inside and shake it up. If you want to use your bottle in that manner I would recommend a bottle cleaning brush. A bottle cleaning brush will get the finer particles removed better and will keep it fairly clean. Some residue is ok, it shouldn’t affect the color you’re mixing.
Once you measure the water and pour it into a separate container open the outer bag of the dye pack (1 per 12.5lbs and 2 if using 25lbs) and place it in the water. The inner bag is water soluble and doesn’t need to be opened.
We mix the dye pack for roughly 45-60 seconds with a drill and paddle mixer. This fully dissolves the packet.
After the color is fully dissolved we add the base to the colored water. We will mix again for 2 minutes (until the stopwatch says 3:00 minutes total). That’s right, we also use a stopwatch for all of our PermaColor Select batches. We want to be consistent. It’s paid off, we’ve never had a color issue when using multiple batches.
Once the initial mix is complete we will let the grout slake for 5 minutes. Slaking allows the grout to start curing. Once the slake is over mixing again breaks down the cure that has started and it will start over again. The second time takes longer and forms a stronger bond. If you want a long pot life, don’t skimp on the slake.
Once the slake is finished mix again for another minute. This is the final step and you’re ready to use the grout after this. From here you can use the grout as normal and follow the directions for spreading and clean up.
