Nebraska Hiking in Buffalo Creek is an all-day trip in two parts. Enjoy Nebraska Outdoors. Part 2. (The burned and the not burned), and it is enjoying the Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Outdoors in Nebraska is a great experience. This area is an easy hike and can be done on the existing roads. This solo hike was in a burned wildlife management area just outside of Melbeta Nebraska. I decided to take an adventure into a 5-month-old fire. The charred trees and ground gave the whole area a different look. The rugged terrain and the blue sky are fantastic sights. But hikers and sightseers, beware, it can be dangerous. Take precautions when hiking outdoors in burned areas in Nebraska.
1. Check the weather (WIND). My guess on wind would be 30 mph. I don't go. The risk is too great for trees to blow over. (RAIN)again I don't go because it causes the soil to be loose and can cause trees to fall. Even after months have passed, these areas can still cause threats. Debris can build up in the canyons and the draws, causing water to back up. Eventually, it can break free and roar down the Canyon, causing a flash flood, taking rocks and debris with it to the bottom.
2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. LOOK UP, Down, and LISTEN you want to make sure that there are no snags or hillsides that could fall. Watch out for roots that have been burned out leaving no trace of a deep hollow underground that would cause you to twist an ankle. Listen for things like the wind picking up, falling gravel and rocks, breaking branches, thuds from falling trees, this usually means something is going on and you need to be very aware.
3. If you have to cross or plan on visiting burned areas, please be safe. Remember that a lot of the signs that were posted on trails could be missing make sure you know how to navigate through those areas. If you absolutely must stay the night in a burned area, make sure that there are no overhanging trees that could fall on you and that you are on higher ground in case of severe rain.
