For this week's Culturally Curious hop, The Wick met with Turner-Prize winning artist Lubaina Himid CBE RA and multi-disciplinary artist Magda Stawarska to explore their new exhibition 'Another Chance Encounter' at Kettle's Yard.
'Another Chance Encounter' presents new works by Himid and Stawarka inspired by the Kettle's Yard house and collection, centring around the artists' longstanding interests in occluded and marginal narratives. The artists illuminate the figures and objects that have been left out of historical records.
Highlights of the exhibition include a multimedia installation, drawing on surviving correspondence between writer Sophie Brzeska and artist Nina Hamnett. Himid also presents a new cycle of large-scale paintings, portraying imagined street vendors in Tangiers - a nod to Jim and Helen Ede’s time in North Africa.
Kettle’s Yard, part of the University of Cambridge, is both a unique house and a modern art gallery, renowned for its thoughtful exhibitions and intimate atmosphere. Created by former Tate curator Jim Ede and his wife Helen, it embodies their belief in the quiet power of art to enrich everyday life.
