Heathrow Express services usually operate every 15 minutes between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport and is the quickest way to the Airport from a London terminal station. There are alternate slower services to Paddington by TfL and the Elizabeth line (Crossrail) service which does operate through to central London via Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road to Stratford/Shenfield and Canary Wharf/Abbey Wood. There is also the even slower but cheapest rail option of the London Underground Piccadilly line from all the Heathrow Airport terminals including terminal 4. When using the Express there is interchange at Paddington with Underground Bakerloo, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines as well as the Elizabeth line and GWR services along the GWML.
The rolling stock used on Heathrow Express is currently 4 carriage class 387 Electrostar which are operated in multiple as 8 carriage services. The class 387 are also used on the Gatwick Express. The class 387 are better suited to airport passengers by their internal layout compared to the class 345 Aventra on Elizabeth line and 1973 stock on the Piccadilly line due to having large luggage racks and 2+2 seating as well as a first class business zone area on board each train. Previously class 332 were used by Heathrow Express but needed replacing due to Old Oak Common depot no longer being available for this class of train and GWR having spare class 387.
This route is fully electrified using overhead AC electrification. The Heathrow Express uses the fast lines on the Great Western Main Line with the relief lines being used by the slower Elizabeth line (previously Heathrow Connect) services. The Heathrow Airport tunnels are double track and there are 2 mainline platforms at each of the 3 Heathrow Airport stations.
