#2 Jazz Violin, II - V - I progression - Violino Jazz, cadenza II - V - I
I'm going to introduce the II–V–I progression, a common cadential chord progression. For convenience we'll refer to C major.
It is a succession of chords whose roots descend in fifths from the second degree (supertonic: Dm7) to the fifth degree (dominant: G7) and finally to the tonic (Cmaj7).
We use these 3 scales: D Dorian, G Mixolydian, C Ionian (C major scale).
Let me show you three simple exercises to approach this cadential chord progression.
The first one step is with scales, the second will be with arpeggios (broken chords) and the third one with a chromatic approach.
1) Scales: D Dorian, G Mixolydian, C Ionian. It's a good rule to tie 2nd and 3rd 8th notes, 4th and 5th, 6th and 7th etc.
2) 9th chord arpeggios (broken chords): 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9 for each chord.
3) Chromatic approach: note that approaches a target note by step. We can add approach notes to seventh chords arpeggios (Minor seventh chord, Dominant seventh chord, Major seventh chord).
After practicing with these different exercises, enjoy your play and improvise on a backing track (you can find it online) by mixing them to create your own musical language.
You have to study this progression in all 12 major keys of course.
Thank you for your attention bye bye, see you soon!
