Engines with leaking spark plug tube seals can be detected by removing the spark plug wire and looking down the spark plug hole. If the oil is found in the hole, then the gasket is leaking and should be replaced. Leaking spark plug tube seals are normally replaced with the valve cover gasket. If this seal is left too long without replacement it usually saturates the spark plug wire with oil causing it to deteriorate.
