Yeshua and the Woman at the Well

We can learn a lot from how Yeshua talked to people.

John 4:5-30

Yeshua went through Samaria. Most Jews did NOT go through Samaria. They believed the Samaritans were “Unclean people”.

Yeshua met the Woman at Jacob’s well.

Moses, Jacob, Isaac all found their wives at a well.

Yeshua asked the woman to give Him water. She is surprised, because most Jews wouldn’t drink from a cup touched by Samaritans.

Samaritans had a different Mountain (Gerishim not Zion). They had a different center. They were wrong and the Jewish Sanhedrin considered them heretics, impure, unclean. Jews wouldn’t touch them with a ten foot pole. (Remember the Good Samaritan Parable)

Yeshua went THROUGH Samaria, not around it.

Yeshua asked for a drink from the Samaritan woman, probably used her cup
John 4:9 She is surprised because Jews don’t associate with Samaritans
He told her that SHE should ask for living water from Him
She said, “You don’t have a bucket? Are you greater than Jacob, who’s well this is?”
Yeshua doesn’t talk down to the woman, but has a conversation with her
Yeshua says, if you drink from this well, you will be thirsty again, but if you drink from the well that I give, you will have everlasting water. Yeshua was breaking social taboos
Yeshua tell her to call her husband. When she answers that she doesn’t have a husband, Yeshua tells her that she has had 5 husbands and is living with a man she isn’t married to. But He doesn’t condemn her. He keeps talking with her.
He didn’t tell the woman to repent. He didn’t judge her. He didn’t say to “Sin no more”
She dind’t need physical healing, she didn't need food, she needed understanding, respect, and a non-judgmental listening ear.
Jesus was not a regular religious Jewish man that she was used to meeting.
She proclaims that she believes Yeshua must be a prophet. She must have been religiously aware to talk about this.
We should have these same attitudes when talking with people. Not talk down to them
Then she asks about the differences in the Samaritans and the Jewish beliefs. Yeshua didn’t give her the typical answer. He didn’t say, YOU are WRONG” We are RIGht” but he answered her questions on a spiritual level.
So she could see that Yeshua had something different. So she mentions that she knew that Messiah would come and teach everything. So she must have know the scriptures, even as a Samaritan. Yeshua proclaims that He is the Messiah.

His disciples come back and are surprised to see Him talking with the Samaritan woman, but they didn’t say anything. They must have known Yeshua by then.
The woman went to proclaim to the town about her conversation with Yeshua and proclaimed that He was the Messiah.
