This video introduces you to Ms. Honami Suzuki, one of Japan's famous Award-winning actresses. She was born to Japanese parents in Tokyo and raised in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. Wherever she went, she simply stood out for her beauty. In 1984, while still in high school, Honami applied for the 9th Horipro Talent Scout Caravan to simply enjoy the challenge of it. Out of 120,000 applicants, she won the judges' special award, which marked her debut as a model. She got into Seijo University's Faculty of Japanese Literature but dropped out as she got busier with her entertainment career.
In 1986, Honami worked full time as an actress. She appeared in a Kanebo Cosmetics commercial in a swimsuit, and also appeared in the drama "Onna Fuurin Kazan," the NHK morning drama "Non-chan no Yume," and trendy dramas that were at the height of their popularity at the time, which helped her to gain fame.
In 1991, Honami starred in Fuji TV's Monday 9pm drama "Tokyo Love Story," which was a huge hit around the world. It became such a social phenomenon that it was said that "women disappeared from the town on Monday nights." Honami left a strong impression as the heroine, Rika Akana, and became an instant hit drama. With her affair with Ryo Ohta, a star producer at Fuji TV at the time, as a backdrop, Honami was selected to play leading roles in Fuji TV's primetime dramas one after another, solidifying her position as an actress. In addition, as trendy Japanese dramas were being broadcast in the world and securing high ratings, Honami's name and face became known around the world. Combined with the popularity of Japanese cosmetics in China and Korea in particular, there were many inquiries from the manufacturer asking if they could obtain posters for Kanebo Cosmetics, for which Honami was the image girl.
The Fuji TV Monday 9 dramas in which Honami starred in the 1990s, "In the Name of Love" in 1992, "At the End of This World" in 1994, and "Koibito Yo" in 1995, were all hits and drew much attention. Honami appeared in the 1999 historical drama Genroku Ryoran, but found out she was pregnant during filming. This resulted in her appearances being significantly reduced from what was originally planned. This caused her relationship with her agency Horipro to deteriorate, and she left the agency.
On 4 Dec 2008, Honami announced she would join Ishibashi's agency Arrival and gradually resume her entertainment career, as her two daughters had entered elementary school. She appeared on the cover of the Jan 2009 issue of Bunka Publishing Bureau's Mrs., released on Dec 6 of the same year, and began serializing her essay "Honami Shokudo."
In 2011, Honami made her full-fledged comeback to acting for the first time in 12 years in the historical drama Go: Princesses of the Warring States, and appeared in the film Nobou no Shiro, released in the same year, for the first time in 11 years.
In 2016, Honami starred in a serial drama for the first time in 18 years in Nonmama Hakusho.
In 2017, she rented a room in an apartment using the prize money she won on a TV quiz show, and started a theater workshop with ordinary people, including Kenshiro Nakata, calling it a "club activity." She also visits many small theaters, and in 2018, she was so impressed by a work by Tomosaka Tomo that she wanted to appear in it, and as a result, she will star in her first comedy in 2024, "Toubon Seisou" (and the live drama "Nama Dora! Tokyo wa 24-ji -Starting Over-" broadcast on Fuji TV as a prequel).
On 13 Nov 1998, Honami announced her remarriage to Takaaki Ishibashi, a comedian. She also announced that she was three months pregnant and was retiring from the entertainment industry. The next day, the two held a wedding press conference. She disappeared from the public eye after her first starring role in the movie "Ichigensan" (released in 2000), which she had already finished filming. She now has three beautiful daughters; she lived as a full-time housewife until her divorce from Takaaki. Today, she is back working as an actress again.
