This was another “package experience” for us. As ARMY Gold Member, Maria, suggested…we watched and analyzed Spine Breaker in the following order:

1. Spine Breaker Color-Coded Lyrics
2. DKDKTV - Spine Breaker Explained by a Korean
3. BTS GAYO (with Self-Made MV at the end)
4. Live Performance from 5th Muster in 2019!

Up until this point, we had not heard BTS speak as directly, critically and forcefully to Korean youth as they did in this song. Spine Breaker was BTS’ attempt to touch the conscious of Korean youth and implore them to STOP disrespecting their parents, STOP falling victim to materialism and peer pressure, and STOP being SPINE BREAKERS!

Sonically, the song gave us old-school hip-hop vibes. It began with a groovy beat/sample that piqued our interest, and was followed by an array of diverse elements and voice effects that all added to the overall vibe and message.

Can we take a moment to appreciate V’s baritone voice!? It was the perfect fit for such a catchy and penetrating hook.

And the rap line…they SPIT SOME BARS. Our favorite bar came from the boss-man himself:

🎵 “Yeah I dunno, yes I’m loco, is it no-no?
I know they ain’t cheap but they got mojos.” 🎵

Also, the fact that the members created a homemade music video for this song FROM SCRATCH in a matter of hours was REMARKABLE to see. They took it hella serious, but also had copious amounts of fun. Jin as the “Stylist” and “Dance Director” made for some spontaneous outfits and hilarious dance moves…scratch that…ICONIC dance moves.

It all came full circle when the members appeared on stage at their 5th Muster in 2019 with a camcorder in hand, all wearing the same attire and doing the same dance moves as they had in their homemade music video. They are creative geniuses.
