For Hope (Full Film, 1996)

As we remember our beloved board member Bob Saget, we're honored to continue to share what he considered one of the most fulfilling projects he ever worked on: "For Hope."

"For Hope" was Directed and Executive Produced by Bob, starring board member emeritus Dana Delany in the title role. When “For Hope” aired on ABC on November 17, 1996, it was the first—and still only—movie to tell a family’s story of what it's like to live with scleroderma.

This film was written by Susan Rice, produced by Karen Moore, and executive produced, along with Bob, by Brad Grey and Bernie Brillstein. The incredible cast included Dana Delany in the starring role, alongside Henry Czerny, Polly Bergen, Harold Gould, Tracy Nelson, and Chris Demetral. There were many other guests who cameo'd and gave their time to this film as a gift, to help tell this important story about a then-unrecognized diseased. The SRF Founder, Sharon Monsky, also appears as herself in this film.

The story is loosely based on events that directly affected Bob and his family, and mainly his sister, Gay Saget. He had lost her to scleroderma, two years earlier, in 1994. He made this film as a statement of the frustration he and his family had been left with after his sister had been misdiagnosed and mistreated for the symptoms.

"It was a very emotional and fulfilling project, a moment in my life that I will always treasure," Bob said months before his passing. "I believe that TV movie helped put scleroderma on the map for many. I will spend the rest of my life dedicated to helping our amazing Board of Directors at the incredible Scleroderma Research Foundation to work with the best medical minds in science as we raise the funds for research to one day find a cure."
