The Windy City…. Off the Great Lake of Michigan. The third largest city in America is as ruggedly beautiful as the cold days of January are wintery. Being called the City in the Garden for their historic accumulation and system of nature Parks but also being the former home to infamous Mob Boss Al Capone and the Chicago Outfit. That Midwestern hospitality mixed with hardened city slicker personality. This place is just as amiable as it is arduous.
Art: I am 18 weeks deep into the season and Im not gonna switch up the flow now. the game isn’t for a few days so I had time to see What Chi-town had to offer.
Narration: Just like any major US city, Chicago has its fair share of Iconic marks. Like the giant bean at Millennium Park. Officially named “Cloud Gate” created by Anish Kapoor. Wrigley Field in North Chicago where the Cubs play. University of Chicago on the Southside next to midway. with it harbors and river that runs through the city. Chicago is a scenic place. Where around every corner, a photo opportunity awaits.
Narration: Even with all the beautiful sights, the glam vs grit theme of the city is holding true. Al capone and the chicago mafia outfit in the Southside of Chicago created war with the Irish in the Northside in the 1920s . While the The South side of Chicago has greatly changed, many things have stayed the same. The South Side now is infamously known as Chiraq. And has been in the news frequently due to the persistent violence in recent years where many inhabitants equate it to a modern day war zone. But news media hasn’t been the only buzz this region has been getting, Chiraq, has had a significant cultural influence on the Music Industry pioneering “Drill Music” since early 2010s. defined by its dark, violent, nihilistic lyrical content and ominous trap-influenced beats. Chicago Rap Trailblazers like Chief Keef, Lil Reese, and Young Chop have all helped the hardened Chicago region reach national limelight. Chief Keef’s wildly acclaimed debut Album “Finally Rich” made waves through America, giving a glimpse into the vibrations of the Chicago struggle.
Art: In san diego for high school I vividly remember everyone in my class bumping chief keef’s finally rich album. He was wildy popular and we lived no where close to chicago. But often times through music, you feel like you’re there in the setting which takes place. So being that I was there, I took a bus down to where the University of Chicago is on the southside. While the campus and surrounding area is mostly nice, riding through the other neighborhoods, you could tell there was poverty and devastation. I am not saying I went to any of the worst neighborhoods, because I don’t know, but the streets I came across, you could tell the area has been through some hardship. But for better or worse, whether I am right or wrong. I naturally try to stay on the optimistic and positive side of things while still being aware of the hardship and injustice of other people and places go through. And chicago is one of those place. Rapper and Philatropist Chance the Rapper is a person I see, that is really trying to uplift the area and I commend him for that. But Back to regular scheduled programming, I am ready to grub out. And I start my food journey with the Chicago dog.
Narration: At Portillios, one of the more famous Hotdog Chains in Illinois. Portillo’s have been trapping out chicago dogs since 1963.
Narration: But chicago has other delicacies, so off to Little Italy where Al’s Italian Beef rules the chicago Streets. Where its arguably the face of chicago cuisine.
Narration: Al’s Beef has been serving up these sandwhiches since 1938, so I had to go the original location in Little Italy to taste a little history. Its a simple sandwich.. Italian roll, Beef, peppers and Jus. If Guy Ferreri gives this place the stamp of approval, you know its good.
Art: So good. I murdered that sandwich. Each bite was beefy, soggy and flavorful wrapped into one.
Pizzaria Uno is the birthright to this unique chicago creation but tourists downtown tend to take a bite between two modern day rivals. Giradono’s Pizzaria and Lou Malnati’s.
Art: I tried out Giradono’s, and while many people have their favorite places. I wasn’t disappointed with my deep dish experience. Gooey with Cheese, savory with the assorted meats and veggies. I left the table feeling full and satisfied. A must try when here in Chicago.
