Fishguard (Welsh: Abergwaun, meaning “mouth of the River Gwaun”) is a small coastal town in Pembrokeshire, southwest Wales. It’s known for its dramatic seascapes, historic significance, and strong cultural ties to Welsh traditions.

Key Features:

1. Location & Landscape:
• Fishguard sits on the rugged coastline of north Pembrokeshire, overlooking the Irish Sea.
• The town is split into two parts:
• Lower Fishguard (Cwm), nestled in a sheltered cove at the mouth of the River Gwaun—very picturesque, with fishing boats, stone cottages, and steep wooded slopes.
• Upper Fishguard, the main commercial area, sitting above on the cliffs, with shops, cafes, and public buildings.

2. History:
• Fishguard is famously the site of the last invasion of Britain in 1797, when French troops landed nearby. Local legend celebrates the courage of local heroine Jemima Nicholas, who helped foil the invasion.
• There’s a tapestry (inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry) displayed in the Town Hall that tells this story in detail.

3. Port & Transport:
• Nearby Goodwick, often considered part of greater Fishguard, houses the Fishguard Harbour, a major ferry port for sailings to Rosslare in Ireland.
• The town has a railway station (Fishguard & Goodwick), connecting it to Carmarthen and beyond.

4. Culture & Activities:
• The area has a strong Welsh identity, with Welsh widely spoken.
• Home to music and literary festivals, including the Fishguard International Music Festival.
• Great base for walking and wildlife-watching—especially along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which runs through the town and offers breathtaking cliff-top walks.

5. Wildlife & Nature:
• Excellent for seabird spotting, seal watching, and in summer, even dolphins.
• Nearby Strumble Head and Dinas Island offer spectacular views and are popular with hikers.

6. Filming Location:
• Lower Fishguard was used as the fictional Llareggub in the 1972 film version of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
