Should a video game fandom affect your enjoyment?

Fandoms can be filled with very nice or awful people. But for many, the reputation or actions of a fandom can dissuade them from trying or enjoying a game series. A fandom could be some of the greatest and passionate people you've ever seen, but that doesn't make you like a series more. Should the actions of a fan affect your feeling on a franchise?
