100 years ago today, On the 23rd August 1923, 4073 Caerphilly Castle became the first Great Western Castle Class locomotive to enter service under the GWR. Designed by Charles Collett, CME of the Great Western Railway from GJ Churchward's 'Star' class design, this mighty four cylinder 4-6-0 become the pride of the GWR.
Sadly only 8 of these mighty machines have survived into preservation with only 6 of the 8 having steamed in preservation. However despite this, these mighty machines still show their worth in preservation today with 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' becoming a flagship for the class, breaking records over the South Devon Banks and the Great Western Mainline between Bristol and London.
This video features all three of the operational Castles, those being:
4079 'Pendennis Castle'
5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'
7029 'Clun Castle'
As someone with a massive soft spot for the GWR, in my opinion these mighty machines are perhaps one of my all time favourite class of locomotives.
I hope you enjoy as I do!
