Why Is UAE-Oman The Strangest Border?

This is Omani territory,

but this is the UAE,

but then this is Omani territory again,

and then this tiny village within the Omani enclave

is another enclave that is part of the UAE again!

What is going on here?

In the early 1900s,

the Shihuh tribe pledged allegiance to the Sultan of Oman,

while other tribes aligned themselves with the rulers of the Trucial States,

a collection of sheikhdoms that would become the UAE.

During the 1920s and 1930s,

the British began to formalise borders.

They recognised the allegiance of the tribe in Madha to Oman.

However, the village of Nahwa remained loyal to the Emirate of Sharjah,

which then became a counter-enclave.

That means, if you wanted to visit the beach from Nahwa,

you would first have to pass through Oman.

Similarly, the Musandam Peninsula has been inhabited by the same Shihuh tribe.
