Join us on a lazy Sunday afternoon as we stroll down the narrow streets of Sanmachi Suji, Inuyama’s historic castle town. About a ten-minute walk from Hotel Indigo Urakuen Gardens, this old Edo-period neighborhood is packed with character, but heads up, most shops close early, around 5 PM.
As we walked along the lanes lined with traditional wooden buildings, we spotted ducks on leashes and dogs decked out in tiny hats and costumes, little quirks that bring the town to life. Food trucks and tiny shops offer local snacks, handmade trinkets, mame beans, a symbol of good fortune in Japanese culture, and many more fun finds.
We stopped at convenience stores and found unusual treats like dried squid snacks and mini sake bottles. There was a friendly singing competition, which added to the lively atmosphere. In the evening we also went to a local ramen restaurant where the fried chicken was a highlight we loved.
Sanmachi Suji isn’t polished or touristy; it’s busy but still feels authentic and is packed with little surprises. Whether you’re here for the food, the eccentric pets, or the feel of old Japan, this walk leaves an impression you won’t forget.
