Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) is a type of redness that occurs on the skin after acne has healed, particularly in individuals with lighter skin tones. It results from damage to the small blood vessels (capillaries) in the dermis caused by inflammation during the acne healing process. These damaged capillaries remain dilated, leading to persistent pink, red, or purple discoloration on the skin. Unlike post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is caused by excess melanin, PIE is vascular in nature and does not respond to traditional skin-lightening treatments.
Treatment with Pulsed Dye Lasers (PDL)
Pulsed dye lasers are highly effective for treating PIE because they specifically target the dilated blood vessels causing the redness. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light at a wavelength that is absorbed by hemoglobin in the blood vessels. This energy is converted to heat, which selectively destroys the damaged capillaries without harming the surrounding tissue.
