On Sarturday the 29th of July 20 17, Young Volunteers for the Environment Members joined in a mass tree planting exercise in Gunjur organized by Environmental Concern Group. The activity was well attended by the village youths, associations, youth led environment organizations, football clubs, forest management personnel and media outlets which includes the state television GRTS to cover the event. The tree planting was done along the river side and Gunjur sand mining area which is at an alarming state due to environmental damaged thereby raising immediate concerns. According to the villagers, this place used to be the main area for rice cultivation for the village but with the mining activities on the increase, it has forced them to abandon the area which eventually affects their livelihood. Different varieties of trees were planted for both economic and ecological purpose. Part of the trees planted, are cashew trees which has a lot of ecological and socio-economic benefit not only to the environment but to the community of Gunjur at large.
