Robert Schumann - "Märchenbilder" for Viola and Piano, Op.113 (1851)
Robert Schumann (8 June 1810 – 29 July 1856) was a German composer, pianist, and music critic of the early Romantic era. He composed in all the main musical genres of the time, writing for solo piano, voice and piano, chamber groups, orchestra, choir and the opera. His works typify the spirit of the Romantic era in German music.
Schumann composed "Märchenbilder" in four days, from March 1 to March 4, 1851, during his short stay in Dusseldorf as a conductor. Chronologically, these four fantasy pieces occupy a place between two sonatas for violin and piano, without figuratively echoing them.
All pieces are dedicated to violinist and conductor Wilhelm Joseph von Vasilevsky (1822-1896), who performed them together with Clara Schumann at a family meeting on March 15. Vasilevsky was at that time an accompanist in Dusseldorf. The first known public performance was that of Clara and Vasilevsky at the Zum Goldenen Stern in Bonn (Germany) on November 12, 1853.
