Be sure to have your volume up for this clip. The audio and video were filmed using a GoPro on separate days with the audio being some of the most stunning whale singing that we have heard in many years. The video is yet more footage of our curious friend 'scratchy'.
Humpback Whales sing some of the most complex and beautiful songs known. It is know that these songs evolve and change each year. Each song is made up of several elements whether that be a long groan, low moan, roaring sounds, trills, or chirps, and are arranged into simple repeating patterns usually with two to four different sound types. Several of these elements are then strung together to make a unique song and are repeated many times. Some of the elements that can be heard in this recording are sounds that we have never heard and are quite remarkably different from the usual elements that have been heard from year to year. Just yesterday we again heard some of these elements repeated by another whale (although coming from quite a distance away). There is no end to the wonder and amazement of the complexity of these curious creatures.
