The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is often forgotten, but one of the most pristine and isolated wilderness regions of the lower 48 states, with beautiful coastline on 3 great lakes, over 300 waterfalls, 4000 lakes, 12,000 miles of rivers, and just 3 communities with populations over 10,000 residents. In a lot of ways, it feels closer to Alaska than any other state.
Today, we tour the towns of Mackinac City, Naubinway, St Ignace, Engadine, Gulliver, Manistique, Shingleton, and Munising, as well as beautiful scenery and 2 Ghost Towns from the Copper Mining Rush!
Yes, the Upper Peninsula has a lot of history with more lighthouses than any other state and over 100 Ghost Towns which have since been abandoned by all or nearly all their residents!
But while the UP's population is much smaller than it was a century ago, 300,000 people still CHOOSE to live here despite the lack of jobs, bad weather, and extreme isolation, with some towns being so rural & remote, the nearest grocery store or highway is over 100 miles away!
What is life really like in Mackinac, Chippewa, Schoolcraft, Alger, and Marquette County, Michigan? Join me on this epic road trip to find out.
