Before “Planet Adak” had a title—or any sense of direction—I took my son out on a windy afternoon to explore a hillside blowout (which was, we later realized, not a blowout at all). The idea was simple: press record, walk into the weather, and see if this island would give us something worth filming.
What we ended up with was a tiny father-and-son expedition through snow-blown grass, WWII debris, party-cabin relics, and one of the island’s Miniature Forests of Mystery—those strange little clusters of spruce planted by the Navy in the ‘50s and ‘60s.
The audio was unusable (thank you, subtitles), the wind was uncooperative, and my son—the cameraman—was very patient with a moving camera and a moving dad. But there was something alive in this footage.
