A visit and tour of the historic Bath Abbey

A walk-through tour of the historic Bath Abbey, a place of worship for over 1,000 years.

Starting in Abbey Churchyard, we take a brief look around the historic church, with its current origins dating back to 1499, but it has been recognised as a place of worship since 675 AD.

Our tour inside will lead you into the nave, where you can admire its stone fan vaulted ceiling, completed in two phases, the latest by George Gilbert-Scott, the renowned Victorian architect, in the restoration of 1860-1873. You can admire further embellishments by him in the gas chandeliers and choir stalls. Sadly his fine carved Victorian Pews were removed in 2018 as part of Project Footprint.

Our tour will explore the many of the Ledgerstones & Wall Memorials installed in Bath Abbey as we take in the south transept and The Waller Tomb, installed for the first wife of Sir William Waller.

We get a look at the beautiful Klais organ that was installed in 1997 and is providing the soundtrack to this tour.

We take a discreet look into the Gethsemane chapel, as well as admiring the many stained glass windows, including the East Window and the King Edgar Window.

We pass by the Tomb of James Montague, the Bishop of Bath & Wells, and 17th-century benefactor of the Abbey, before stepping outside to admire Bath Abbey through the York Arch.
