Hubli to Ankola Rail Line: 30 Years of Approvals, Protests & Progress Update 2025 // ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ ಅಂಕೋಲಾ ಹೊಸ ರೈಲು ಮಾರ್ಗ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಯೋಜನೆ.
This video is about the Hubli-Ankola railway project, which is envisioned as a key infrastructure development aiming to significantly enhance connectivity between inland Karnataka and the western coastal region. The project involves constructing approximately 164.44 km of a broad-gauge railway line passing through ecologically sensitive forests, including parts of the Kali Tiger Reserve and Bedthi Conservation Area.
Key HighlightsThe project is still under development, with the final location surveys, environmental clearances, and approvals awaited from the Ministry of Railways, Karnataka High Court, and NBWL.
Estimated costs for this project are around ₹17,000 crore, reflecting the complex engineering and environmental challenges involved in traversing dense forests and wildlife corridors.
The line aims to reduce travel time between Hubli and the coastal areas, boost regional trade, facilitate faster movement of goods, and promote tourism.
Environmental and Legal ContextThe development has faced strong opposition from environmentalists and scientists over concerns of felling about 2.2 lakh trees and disrupting wildlife habitats, especially in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Karnataka Wildlife Board initially approved the project, but the approval was subject to stay orders by courts due to environmental concerns. The courts advised the Railway Ministry to prepare a revised DPR that minimizes ecological damage and complies with wildlife protections.
Future OutlookThe project is in the planning stage, with South Western Railway waiting for all regulatory clearances before proceeding with land acquisition and technical surveys.
The government remains committed, with discussions ongoing for a revised plan that balances development needs with environmental safeguards, aiming for early execution once approvals are secured.
This project is set to be a transformative addition to Karnataka’s transportation network, provided environmental safeguards are fully integrated into its final implementation.
Keni Port is an upcoming deep-water port project in Karnataka being developed by JSW Infrastructure on a Public-Private Partnership basis. Strategically located on the west coast of North Karnataka, Keni Port aims to boost the region’s maritime infrastructure and significantly enhance cargo handling capacity. With an initial capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum, it will serve key industrial hubs like Bellary, Hubballi, and Kalaburagi, reducing dependency on ports in neighboring states. This port is poised to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve trade logistics for Karnataka, positioning the state as a vital maritime gateway on India’s west coast. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative project!
