Why Time Travel Will NEVER Exist | Neil deGrasse Tyson
In 1905, a twenty-six-year-old patent clerk in Switzerland destroyed everything we thought we knew about time.
His name was Albert Einstein. He had no university position. No research laboratory. No famous mentors. He was a third-class technical expert at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, reviewing applications for electromagnetic devices and earning a modest salary while scribbling physics equations in his spare time.
That year, working alone, thinking thoughts no human had ever thought before, Einstein published four papers that would revolutionize our understanding of reality. But it was the fourth paper—his special theory of relativity—that shattered our most fundamental intuition about the universe.
Time, Einstein showed, is not what we think it is.
We experience time as universal. Constant. The same for everyone. Your watch and my watch tick at the same rate, we assume, regardless of where we are or how fast we're moving. One second for you equals one second for me. One hour in New York equals one hour in Tokyo equals one hour on the Moon.
This is wrong.
