The Faridkot Teeka is the very first complete exegesis of the Guru Granth Sahib ever created. The commentary was started in 1877 by multiple Gianis (scholars) from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly the Nirmala and Giani (Bunga) lineages.

This commentary was written when translations such as Ernest Trumpp’s “The Adi Granth” were being published. These translations proclaimed the Sikh tradition as a waning, decaying faith which was bound for the history books. In this way, the creation of this Teeka (exegesis) came at an incredibly critical time for the Sikh Community. Some of the biggest scholars of the time, such as Pandit Tara Singh Narotam drafted the commentary.

Raja Bikram Singh of Faridkot commissioned the Teeka. The Amritsar Singh Sabha also had a hand in the project. The first draft was prepared primarily by Giani Badan Singh in 1883. Giani Badan Singh relayed many of the Uthankas (contexts) for shabads in the Guru Granth Sahib. It was then revised by a committee of Sikh Scholars with Mahant Sumer Singh, Head Granthi of Patna Sahib presiding.

The language of the Faridkot Teeka is notoriously hard to understand. It is written in “Sant Bhasha”. This Katha (oral exegesis) is hence a wonderful resource for anybody who would like to access these traditional meanings in a digestible format.

“ਫਰੀਦਕੋਟ ਟੀਕਾ” ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਟੀਕਾ (ਵਿਆਖਿਆ) ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਹ ੧੮੭੭ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ (ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ), ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ (ਬੁੰਗਾ) ਸੰਪਰਦਾਵਾਂ, ਵਲੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।

ਇਹ ਟੀਕਾ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਿਖੀ ਗਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਰਨਸਟ ਟਰੰਪ ਦੀਆਂ "The Adi Granth" ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਸਿੱਖ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਘਟਦੀ, ਗਿਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਧਰਮਕ ਰੀਤੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਸਨ, ਜੋ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੱਧ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਇਸ ਟੀਕੇ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸ਼ੀਲ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਰੋਤਮ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਟੀਕੇ ਦੀ ਡ੍ਰਾਫਟ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਫਰੀਦਕੋਟ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਿਕਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਟੀਕੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਪਰਿਯੋਜਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸੀ। ਪਹਿਲਾ ਡ੍ਰਾਫਟ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਦਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ੧੮੮੩ ਵਿਚ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ। ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਦਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਥਾਨਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗਾਂ) ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੋਧਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਹੰਤ ਸੁਮੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪਟਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ, ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸੀ।

ਫਰੀਦਕੋਟ ਟੀਕੇ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ “ਸੰਤ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ” ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਥਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
