Why can someone with aphasia sing, curse, or count to 10... but struggle to get other words out?
In this video, I explain automatic speech in aphasia. These are the kinds of words and phrases that often survive after a stroke or brain injury. We’ll talk about why things like counting, days of the week, common phrases ("I don’t know"), songs, and even cuss words can sometimes come out more easily.
Automatic speech isn’t the final goal, but it can be a powerful first step for people with severe Broca’s aphasia, apraxia of speech, or even global aphasia. Understanding it can give caregivers and families hope — and a place to start.
