宮城県沿岸部を襲う津波 【陸上自衛隊提供映像】

地震発生後、宮城県仙台市から名取市にわたる沿岸部を襲った津波の様子を捉えた映像(ヘリからの空撮)。陸上自衛隊東北方面隊が撮影。
仙台港の南側、約800フィート上空から、映像は始まる。 火力発電所と石油化学コンビナートの隣接する付近で、大量の煙が発生しているが、この時点では、火災による煙なのか、もやなのか、上空からの判別も困難な様子。
ヘリは、西側方面に向け飛行し、仙台市北側へと向かう。 地震後の市街地は、まだ大きな被害は確認できないが、途中、七北田川付近の市立高砂中学校で、屋上に避難している多くの人々の姿が見てとれる。
しかし、さらに南下して名取川あたりにさしかかったあたりで状況が一変、ヘリの隊員らは、川を遡上(そじょう)するすさまじい濁流を目にする。 平地では、どす黒い波が田畑にみるみる押し寄せ、ビニールハウスを次々とのみ込んでいく。津波から必死に逃れようとする乗用車も見える。 眼下に拡がる惨劇に、本部と交信する隊員も、思わず嗚咽(おえつ)とも悲鳴ともとれる声を発する。すでに、名取川河口付近は甚大な被害。 地域一面が浸水し、家屋の屋根や高い建物の上部だけが、水の上に散在しているといった状況。周囲を水に囲まれた市立荒浜小学校の屋上に、多数の人が避難している様子も確認できる。
再びヘリは、若林区荒浜地区の深沼海岸付近まで北上し、海岸線と浸水した街並みの状況を映し出す。
さらに、カメラを海の沖合方向へ向けると、目前の信じがたい光景に、隊員らも驚きの声を発する。明らかに大きな波が、白波を立て、2波・3波...と、立て続けに陸地に迫っていたのだ。
5分後、砂浜と海との境が判別不能となった深沼海岸付近の悲惨な被害状況を伝え、この映像は終わる。

It begins approximately 800 feet high in the sky, to the south of Sendai port. Massive amounts of smoke are being emitted near an area where a thermal power plant and petrochemical combine stand side by side, Even from above in the sky, it is difficult to differentiate the smoke as occurring from a fire or mist. The helicopter flies westbound, heading to the northern region of Sendai city. Severe damage to the city's central area is yet to be confirmed, but along the way, a crowd of evacuees are witnessed on the rooftop of Takasago junior high school. The situation is turned upside down when the helicopter continues down further south, approaching the Natori river. The helicopter crew witness turbid waters going upstream against the flow of the river. On the flatlands, black waves rush to the fields and swallow greenhouses in succession. A passenger car tries desperately to escape the tsunami. Eyeing the tragedy before his very own eyes, a crew member lets out an unexpected cry while communicating with the headquarters. Or was that a scream?
Natori river.has already suffered tremendous damage near its river-mouth. The entire region is flooded, only the tops of buildings and rooftops of houses remaining above water sporadically. One can confirm a group of people evacuating to the rooftop of Arahama elementary school, being surrounded by a pool of water. The helicopter heads up north to near the shore of Fukanuma in Arahama district of Wakabayashi ward, projecting the situation at the coastline and flooded townscapes. When the camera is directed offshore to the sea, crew members cannot help but to scream in fright at the unbelievable sight before their eyes. A clearly gigantic white-crested wave was approaching the land in succession.
5 minutes later, the footage ends with a reporting of the tragic damage situation near Fukanuma beach, where the dividing line between the sand and beach was no longer distinguishable.
