Why do we have calculus? Well y=(y*x)/x is a pithy answer but it comes close to getting to the point. Integral structures, where the whole is the sum of its parts, are modeled well by multiplication, simply because multiplication distributes over addition. Differentiable structures, where rates of change become stable in finitely many measurements, are modeled well by division, simply because slopes of lines are fractions. Finally multiplication and division are inverses of each other so it is possible to fashion an entire theory of calculation--a "calculus"-- around this observation: integrals and derivatives are inverses to each other.
