Hiking hut-to-hut on Italy’s Alta Via 1
About a year before this trip, Wil and I blindly started planning our first ever solo trekking adventure and somehow landed on the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites.
Booking rifugios was definitely the most challenging part, but with a lot of research (and a little luck), we pieced together a route that worked perfectly for us. We weren’t able to find accommodations on the entire Alta Via 1 so we had to make our own route on some of the days. This was even with booking a year in advance! It’s a very well traveled popular trail. Perhaps too popular- that would be our only negative experience. This trail could easily be experiencing over tourism
The hut to hut system is truly incredible. Each rifugio provides dinner and breakfast, with the option to pack a lunch for the next day. Every hut we stayed in served delicious homemade meals and offered warm, welcoming hospitality, which made the long hiking days even more rewarding.
If you’re dreaming of a multi day trek with stunning views, great food, and an unforgettable experience we loved hiking hut to hut! Maybe try a different trail than the Alta Via 1.
