Indian born star, Roshan Seth, on why he quit movies in frustration, only to come back in triumph

Indian born movie star, Roshan Seth, whose credits include Ghandi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and A Passage to India, found fame in London but home in Delhi.
A graduate of London's Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts he parlayed early Shakespearean roles on stage into his movie break, in Richard Lester’s Juggernaut, with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif.
But producers’ seemingly only wanted Roshan for ethnic roles.
Frustrated, he quit film and theatre, and, indeed, Britain, to return to India and work as a journalist and editor for almost a decade.
It was Sir Richard Attenborough who recalled Roshan to the movie industry, casting him as India’s Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in the multi-Oscar winning film, Ghandi.
Roshan went on to co-star in films like Mississippi Masala, Monsoon Wedding and Street Fighter, with Kylie Minogue and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
I spoke to him back in 1987, shortly after he’d finished shooting the acclaimed, epic, six hour version of the Charles Dickens novel Little Dorritt …and his character, Mr Pancks:
Roshan is 83 now, lives in Delhi, and has continued to work until recently in films and television in his native India.
