Published back in the 1970s, I get a sense that the original French version of this book might be even earlier. So here we are in 2024, and it's sort of amusing to me that we are calling this content "The Moderns". It goes to show just how confusing the world of art can be.
At least with a title like "Surrealism" you get some sense of what commonalities the artwork might have. But "Modern"? What does "Modern" even mean? And what did "Modern mean in 1970 (or earlier) compared with what "Modern" means now?
In any case, the book is an extremely interesting look at a set of artwork which is definitely not "Renaissance" and which shows a variety of art styles. These pieces might not be available for view anywhere else. The accompanying text gives fascinating details on the artists and background of what was happening.
I love books like this. They help open my eyes to new techniques and new artists I might never find elsewhere. I like having a large-format printed book in front of me to really look at closely. As much as I enjoy laptops and tablets, back-lit art has a quite different feel than printed non-backlit-art. In many ways, the printed version is more authentic to what you would see in the museum standing in front of the piece.
