TOUR BUS HISTORY
Away from the glitter and rhinestones, the Suite 1986 Tour Bus Experience illustrates another facet of the country music icon’s life—the free-spirited traveler. Dolly’s former tour bus gives an authentic look into her colorful interpretation of life on the road from late 2008 to March 2022.
In the 13 years Dolly traveled on this Prevost bus, it traveled roughly 360,000 miles throughout North America.
The most common trips the bus made included the 2,016 miles from Nashville, Tennessee, to Los Angeles, California, and also from Nashville to Dollywood, here in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. In June 2016, Dolly kicked off her largest North American tour in 25 years. The Pure & Simple Tour traveled to more than 60 cities in the U.S. and Canada and was the longest tour Dolly performed while traveling on this bus.
While on the road, Dolly spent most of her time writing. She wrote albums such as “Backwoods Barbie” and “9 to 5 the Musical,” but she also wrote books, television shows and movies. Dolly used her time on the bus to relax and work, both of which she found in writing. Dolly also enjoyed taking care of the people traveling with her, including her best friend and personal assistant Judy Ogle and her bus driver Tim Dunlap. She was known to make them sandwiches, while talking to them about life and family. She often left her bus driver little notes of appreciation and reminders.
This Prevost tour bus was Dolly’s home away from home. Dolly does not enjoy flying, so it was important that her bus was comfortable and could accommodate long trips. A number of customizations and upgrades were done to make sure the bus was fit for Dolly’s life touring the country.
She designed the bus as a space to do work. A full-size refrigerator was installed, which is uncommon on tour buses. In order to put the refrigerator in place, the bus’s windshield had to be removed. Dolly requested electric doors be installed, a bath tub and other details that made the bus more user-friendly. To accommodate her show wardrobe, the bus had three bunk beds instead of the standard six in order to create room for a closet. The bus also included a wig cabinet. Dolly almost always stayed in her bus instead of a hotel room, as she preferred to have her own space, food and belongings. Dolly customized the interior décor of the bus to represent her life on the road. Often referring to it as her “Gypsy Wagon,” Dolly once said this bus was her favorite home. “I have homes all over the United States, but my favorite place is the bus because that way I can just feel those wheels rolling; I’m a true gypsy at heart.”
Dolly requested special hand-painted murals to adorn the walls of the bus. These unique paintings of wayfaring wanderers, wagons and crystal balls paint the interpretation of life on the road for the singer. Jewel-toned fabrics and décor blend seamlessly with the overall theming that Dolly envisioned and brought to life.
In March 2022, Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa acquired the tour bus and created the Suite 1986 Tour Bus Experience. Suite 1986 is an authentic Dolly Parton experience that gives guests a unique and genuine look into the music icon’s life.
