Prophet Yousuf (A) was the son of Prophet Yaqub (Jacob), and he had eleven brothers. Yousuf was particularly loved by his father, which made his brothers extremely jealous.
One night, Yousuf had a dream in which he saw eleven stars, the sun, and the moon bowing down to him. He narrated this dream to his father, Yaqub (A), who understood that this was a sign of Yousuf's future greatness. However, he advised Yousuf to keep the dream a secret from his brothers to prevent them from plotting against him.
2. The Brothers' Jealousy and the Plot
Yousuf's brothers were consumed with jealousy due to their father's preferential treatment of Yousuf. They conspired to get rid of him. Initially, they planned to kill him, but later decided to throw him into a deep well and falsely reported to their father that a wolf had devoured him. They even showed their father Yousuf's shirt stained with false blood as evidence.
3. Yousuf's Ordeal in Egypt
Yousuf was later found by a passing caravan. The travelers pulled him out of the well and sold him as a slave in Egypt. He was purchased by Al-Aziz, a high-ranking official (often identified as Potiphar). Yousuf grew up in Al-Aziz's household, where he gained wisdom and maturity.
4. The Test of Seduction
As Yousuf (A) grew older, he became a handsome and virtuous man. The wife of Al-Aziz, Zuleikha, became infatuated with him and attempted to seduce him. Yousuf resisted her advances, seeking refuge in Allah from wrongdoing. Despite his innocence, Zuleikha accused him of trying to assault her, leading to Yousuf's imprisonment when her lies were believed.
5. Life in Prison and the Interpretation of Dreams
While in prison, Yousuf encountered two fellow prisoners, each of whom had a dream. He accurately interpreted their dreams: one would be reinstated to his position serving the king, while the other would be executed. Yousuf asked the freed man to mention him to the king, but he forgot for several year
6. Yousuf's Rise to Power
Yousuf interpreted the king's dream as a prophecy of seven years of plentiful harvests followed by seven years of severe drought. He advised the king on how to prepare for this by storing surplus grain during the good years to survive the drought. Impressed by his wisdom, the king freed Yousuf from prison and appointed him as a minister or treasurer, giving him authority over the storehouses of Egypt.
7. The Reunion with His Family
During the famine, Yousuf's brothers traveled to Egypt seeking food. They did not recognize Yousuf, who treated them kindly but discreetly tested their sincerity. After several encounters, Yousuf finally revealed his true identity to his brothers. Overcome with guilt and remorse, they sought his forgiveness, which he graciously granted.
8. Lessons from Yousuf's Story
The story of Yousuf (A) carries many moral and spiritual lessons:
Patience and Trust in Allah: Yousuf endured many trials, from betrayal by his brothers to wrongful imprisonment, yet he remained steadfast in his faith.
