Part One is a 32 minute "short version" of Yuma Island. On June 8th 1920, during a period of high water, a portion of Yuma Arizona's Gila Valley was cut off by a man-made avulsive move of the Colorado River which immediately changed the lives of several African American families/settlers that farmed and lived there. An Island was created with explosives that trapped the families for an extended period of time. But this saga begins earlier in the early 1900's when the Yuma Project began and later on the Gila Project. Approximately 172,000 acres was developed for agriculture with the two world class irrigation systems bringing irrigation water to Yuma and surrounding area. But the 4,000 acres, farmed by Black Farmers, was said to have been left out of the projects, but it wasn't true. This short film addresses why. The longer version, Yuma Island Part Two, goes into much more detail in a 2 hour presentation. It explores the Ku Klux Klan in Yuma and their involvement. It also shines the light on city, state, and federal governmental officials with their involvement in the same. Buckle Up...
