Father Eric Garris, the vocation director for the Diocese of Cleveland, was overseas with other Catholic Church members from Ohio for the funeral of Pope Francis.
“I was in Saint Peter's Basilica when I found out he had passed away,” Father Garris said.
On Easter Monday, Father Garris found himself at the epicenter of history as word spread of Pope Francis's death.
“I had gotten a text from one of the Cleveland priests who is here and heading back home and it just said RIP Pope Francis,” Father Garris recalled.
