I went for a nice trail ride with a long-time friend. We've been riding together since 2002. We've ridden this trail many times.
At the far side of the water crossing were two large rocks, in a deep hole. In my attempt to avoid the rocks, I kept looking at them, which resulted in TARGET FIXATION, so of course, I hit them and down I went.
The water was extremely cold. I picked the bike up and tried to start it. It made a partial revolution and STOPPED. At that moment I new the cylinder was full of water.
Neither of us had a spark plug wrench, nor did anyone in two groups of riders that went by. Had this happened on a weekend, instead of a weekday, we'd have seen more people, and someone probably would have had a spark plug wrench.
We pulled the air filter, removed the intake boot between the carb and head, soaked up the water out of the intake ports, drained the carb, then we removed the head pipe. I used a rag to soak up as much water out of the exhaust ports as I could.
We tipped the bike up on its kickstand, then put it in gear. I rotated the rear tire backwards and we expelled a bunch of water.
We put everything back together and the bike started right up. We rode the rest of the day and had a great ride.
The next morning I took the bike to a friend's house near where we were riding and changed the oil. Miraculously, there was no water in the oil.
Lessons Learned:
Don't stare at objects you are trying to avoid hitting.
Pack a spark plug wrench!
