The 2021 Chevy Suburban High Country Is A $75,000 SUV That's Finally Worth It!

Engine:
6.2L N/A V8
420 Hp
Not super peppy, no turbo torque
Super smooth, power comes in halfway up the rev band
Sound is adequate, but subdued since this is the high country

Trans:
10 speed GM built trans
It’s fine, it attempts to get good mileage
Shifts ok when hustling it
Weird layout the pull and push buttons

Steering:
The steering on this thing is really light and pretty numb
No duh on a 3 ton plus truck
The difficult thing is maneuvering around at low speeds
Small circle drive is tough

Dynamics/Suspension:
This is the biggest improvement for this gen
Indep rear susp
Air bags
Buuuttttttery smoooth
The old one was horrific
This isnt a dynamics thing, but you feel like a BOSS behind the wheel of this thing

Towing:
My 6.2 v8 tugs 7900 lbs
Which is somehow less than the 5.3 which does 8300 lbs

Exterior Looks:
I understand styling on something like this is limited, but the previous gen was literally a box
The designers tried a little harder this gen.
Still boxy shape, but that maximizes space on the inside
Let’s start at the front - grille has copper accents and high country embossed
LEDs are the same as the silverado
High country specific wheels
HC fender badge
the n the bourbon badge on the front doors
Electric running boards
Chrome trim on the D pillar
The Rear end is again a little more elaborate than the old one
Silver mustache under the rear window
New taillights and quad exhuast


Interior Looks:
Here’s the deal, GM has got a reputation when it comes to interior
But this is the High country
Every piece of plastic has a coating to it, none of it is scratchy
There are some aluminums, the leather work is pretty good and has a pattern
Nothing creaked or rattled during my week with the truck - i dare say it was built well
As far as a design goes it’s pretty simple, pretty geometric to match the exterior
Speaking of which the steering wheel and center stack has the gold - DOPE
Overall it’s an inoffensive, simple design that works for me
Except for this little cubby on the passenger side….
Oh and one more thing the cluster - it’s almost good

Tech/safety:
This is the top of the top so it has all the goodies
My favorite is the HUD - HUGE AMAZING RES
It also reads the car in front and tells you your live time split (under half second)
You can move the HUD up and down, but you cant make it small and it is a little distracting
You also have a comprehensive safety suite with adaptive cruise and lane keep
One of the best things though is the camera. Higher res than my film camera and all over (BIG)
The head unit is typical GM, but not the latest software the Caddys get
Wireless ACP and AA works ok

Space/Comfort:
Comfort up front is good, fancy HC chairs - feels wide and long behind the wheel
The second row is weird because you duck in and it feels massive and then realize you have these really narrow captains chairs - more like first mate chairs
ONe thing making it feel really big is the massive pano roof - cant get enough
Since the chairs are narrow the passthrough is huge
Then the best part, usable third row even for over 6 foot adults - USBc
The reason this is so much better is cuz we dont have a live axel anymore
Floor can be lower, legroom is better and so is trunk space
Even with the 3rd row up trunk space is CAVERNOUS and under floor storage
Overall a very comfy and practical vehicle for a big family - as long as you can drive it

Gimmicks/Price:
This is a family SUV and there aren’t too many gimmicks
However it is like 75 grand and you do get some special bits
High Country gets you the cool gold in the grille, grille stamp, badging, and wheels
On the inside you get the same gold on the wheel and center stack - cool
The biggest gimmick has to be the rear seat ent. System
Big ass screens, mirror casting, and will break in 4 months - hit by seats going down
Then the air suspension are rear indep transforms this thing, but is it worth 75k

Competitors/Final thoughts:
75k is a lot to ask for a domestic family hauler, but there’s a lot of SUV here as we saw so let’s talk competition:

Ford Expedition - TTv6 (havent spent enough time in it)
Yukon XL - is another 6 grand for a Denali, different look (badass)
Sequoia/Land Cruiser? No
Nissan Armada - never been in one, but I doubt it

Here’s the biggest issue, the Cadillac Escalade starts at 76k so 1000 more. BUt you get more luxuries, more elegant and special design, the supple ride quality, and the new software, and the prestige of having an Escalade. The Suburban is a wonderful SUV but I guess if it were me, pony up that extra cash for the Escalade
