Our next guest for our Conversations on Service video series is Fr Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ, who currently serves as Director of the Manila Observatory. Fr. Jett graduated with a BS Physics degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1980. He also graduated with a Master of Science degree in Physics from Marquette University and a Ph.D in Atmospheric Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He previously served as the Ateneo de Manila University’s 30th President from 2011 to 2020 and was also a former University President of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan.
Fr. Jett was recognized as a National Outstanding Young Scientist in 2000 and was part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
In this video, Fr. Jett looks back on his eye-opening experiences as a student of the Ateneo de Manila University which allowed him to engage deeply with different communities and bear witness to their stories. These experiences served as the catalyst that propelled his journey towards serving others. In the Conversation, Fr. Jett talks about holding on to hope especially when the world seems hopeless, and about not letting the situation of the world paralyze us into not doing anything. He talks about discernment and discovering what makes us happy, and how the things that bring us joy can be our motivation and entry-point to greater service.
