Stoke City had had a half decent time of it. For a provincial club to have spent over 20 years in the top flight was certainly punching above their weight, a far cry from their bankrupt early days. Then in, 1953, they suffered relegation. Entering a bold new decade, where the perpetual stars of English football were formed, they needed to return fast. Tony Waddington gained a promotion, and soon his club would too.

ABOUT THE CHANNEL
What if Football is YouTube's only football magazine, with monthly issues of five videos each month on a topic as far back as the dominant Aston Villa team of the 1890s, as recently as Napoli's stunning 2023 Scudetto winning team, as obvious as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo and their litany of trophies, as obscure as Dynamo Moscow's passovotchka football of the 40s. We've got it all.
