On May 11th, the Volcano Art Center hosted their ongoing Hula Kahiko program, featuring a powerful performance led by esteemed Kumu Kini Kaʻawa. Student dancers from Pāhoa Middle and High Schools took the stage at Kaʻauea Kahua Hula within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. These young practitioners were immersed in learning hula, the ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi language, and sacred kanaka maoli customs.
Their performance paid homage to the beloved Mōʻi Lunalilo, with selections venerating his remarkable life journey, cherished perspectives, and the people and places he held dear. The students also showcased the unparalleled natural beauty of the Puna region through graceful hula movements.
This open-air presentation was just one installment of the Volcano Art Center's yearlong series held at the kahua hula platform adjacent to their gallery in the national park. Though free to attend, park entrance fees applied. These cultural events are made possible through funding from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and donations from people like you. Audiences were advised to prepare for the elements and arrive early due to limited parking.
The Volcano Art Center, established in 1974, is a non-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating the vibrant artistic and cultural traditions of Hawai'i through multidisciplinary programming in the visual, literary and performing arts.
