Rita Strohl est née le 8 Juillet 1865 à Lorient et morte le 27 Mars 1941 à La Gaude. Compositrice et pianiste reconnue de son vivant, son oeuvre sombra dans l'oubli après son décès en 1941.
Sa musique suscite depuis quelques années un regain d’intérêt, encore trop confidentiel au regard de la qualité des œuvres retrouvées, notamment sa Sonate pour violoncelle et piano « Titus et Bérénice ».

Cette œuvre, composée en 1892 et publiée en 1898, a la particularité de conjuguer le genre traditionnel de la Sonate avec un procédé narratif. « Dramatique », sa partition raconte l’histoire de Titus et Bérénice en s’appuyant sur des citations de la tragédie Bérénice de Racine (1670). Chacun des mouvements dépeint toutefois l’étape d’un récit plutôt qu’une action continue. L’œuvre se signale par ses contrastes et son grand souffle expressif, obtenus au moyen d’écritures amples et très variées. Elle est dédiée au violoncelliste Charles Furet.

Born in Lorient Morbihan, Rita Strohl was a gifted composer and pianist. She was endorsed by Camille Saint-Saens, Vincent d’Indy and Gabriel Faure. Jane Bathori sang her Chansons de Bilitis, and Pablo Casals played her music. After her death, her work was unfairly forgotten. Her music has gained renewed interest in recent years, still too confidential given the quality of her works including her Grande Sonate Dramatique "Titus et Bérénice" for cello and piano.

The special feature of this work published in 1898 is that it combines the traditional genre of the sonata with a narrative process. The “dramatic” score tells the story of Titus and Berenice, based on quotations from Racine’s tragedy Bérénice(1670). Each of its movements nevertheless depicts a stage in the narrative rather than a continuous action. The work is distinguished by its contrasts and great expressive range, obtained through ample textures and varied styles. It is dedicated to the cellist Charles Furet.
