Contact and Colonial Period
The London Missionary Society (LMS) first made contact in the 1870s, followed by Anglican and Catholic missions that established schools and churches.
Colonial administration under British and later Australian rule introduced local government councils, plantation labour systems, and coastal trading posts.
Rigo became known for its role in producing early Papua New Guinean leaders, partly due to mission education (e.g., Kwikila became an early government station).
